Larry Payne, PhD
Saturday Morning, Session 1
Four out of every 5 Americans will seek professional help some time in their life for lower back problems. As a yoga student, teacher, or therapist it is important that you be familiar with how to avoid lower back problems and help others. Join Larry Payne as he shares his insights on the topic from many years of private study with Mr. Desikachar, 37 years of interaction with integrative health professionals, and literally thousands of clients. In addition to one-on-one yoga therapy, this workshop will include an introduction to an interactive practice of "Yoga Therapy Groups" for the lower back. This is a similar concept to what physical therapists call "Focus Groups".
Saturday Afternoon, Session 2
A vital part of the Yoga Therapy Rx program at Loyola Marymount University is covering the concept of yoga off the mat. Instructors cover mindset, biomechanical re-education, the importance of personal practice, journaling, food choices, water intake, advanced breathing techniques, and proper rest and relaxation. As an example, with biomechanics alone, the average person takes over 10,000 steps a day. Correcting their gait could be nearly as important as their yoga practice. Join Larry Payne, as he covers all aspects of the Yoga Therapy Rx 8 Steps Wellness Program in an interactive discussion and practice.
Sunday Morning, Session 3
TKV Desikachar described yoga for 3 stages of life - shiksana (building stage), rakshana (maintaining stage), and chikitsa (one-on-one needs or yoga therapy). With the explosion in popularity of yoga in America, these 3 stages have become very misunderstood - leading to more yoga related injuries than ever before. Most affected are the over 120 million men and women in the middle stage (40+). Join Larry Payne as he shares rare video footage of Mr. Desikachar describe these 3 stages. Larry will then describe through lecture and experiential practices how these teachings inspired the principles for Prime of Life Yoga®, which focuses on mid-life and beyond.
